Peptide Melanotan-2 is a synthetic melanocortin peptide hormone that enhances skin tanning. It stimulates melanocytes to produce the protective pigment melanin. Thanks to its melanogenic capabilities, Melanotan-2 is also used to protect against sunlight and its negative effects on human health. The first Melanotan 2 was synthesized at the University of Arizona. Scientists have known that the best protection against skin cancer is sufficient activity of melanin. So on the basis of this finding they find that the most effective way to protect themselves from skin cancer is to stimulate natural pigmentation to create a protective sunburn against the effects of UV rays. The naturally occurring α-MSH hormone causes melanogenesis – a process in which melanocytes produce skin pigment (melanin). However, the half-life of the α-MSH natural hormone is too short to be used as a therapeutic agent and so they decided to find a stronger and more stable hormone. An alternative that would be more usable in practice and met the required criteria. The result is Melanotan 2, which in the future will be widely used not only to stimulate sunbathing but also as a means of preventing melanoma – skin cancer.

Melanotan 2 results, in addition to its main effect, in the skin’s tanning and sunburn, as well as the increase in libido and the improvement of sexual function in both men and women. Research has also proven that Melanotan 2 degrades the human taste of food, so it is also a good alternative for overweight people.
