SS-31 — also referenced as elamipretide, Bendavia or MTP-131 — belongs to the Szeto-Schiller peptide family. What sets it apart from most research peptides is that it has no surface receptor: its alternating aromatic-cationic motif is drawn to the negative potential of the inner mitochondrial membrane, where it binds the phospholipid cardiolipin.
Why researchers study it
Cardiolipin holds together the arrangement of cristae and respiratory chain supercomplexes. When it oxidises — through ageing or metabolic stress — electron transfer loses efficiency and reactive oxygen species leakage increases. In laboratory models SS-31 is examined as a tool that heads off this breakdown:
- it dampens ROS formation at the source rather than scavenging radicals after the fact, as conventional antioxidants do;
- it helps sustain electron transport chain throughput and ATP output in cells under load;
- it features in preclinical work on cardiomyopathy, renal ischaemia-reperfusion injury, skeletal muscle ageing and neurodegeneration.
In September 2025 elamipretide received FDA approval for Barth syndrome — the first mitochondria-targeted peptide ever to do so. The material offered on this page is the research grade, not a clinical preparation.

Storage and reconstitution
